wondering if this is possible, i find the 2 current formate dae and obj kinda lacking, and im currently writing scripts to make maya support some other custom file formates for games engines, so was thinking if there was a ASCII version of NVil filetype and some docs on how it works, i could work on possible making a importer and exporter for maya.

It is not an easy task to develop an open format. Please don't expect me can do it soon.
There may be a way to get around. If you know how to read dae(Colloda) file, I may can add some axtra elements to hold the contents you want.

What about incorporating some of the open file format readers like Assimp? This one gets connected to Blender at the moment. And comes with FBX.
