Hello.
I need some pointers how to make a cleaner model.
although it is close to what I want....it seems to me it can be done better.
Any tips?

I would cut the model in half and apply symmetry to it. That way you only need to do cleanup work on half of it.
Just use loop cut down the center and then delete half the polygons of the model. After that apply symmetry.
Select all the faces on the flat surfaces and turn them into NGon (Look for Make NGon in Tool search).
Use the weld tools to clean up all the stray vertices and weld parts that aren't joined correctly.
