Is there a way to push the vertices of my plane onto the sphere ?

It is something I need to do often with different meshes.

I have turned on retopo for the sphere but the points go everywhere.

Subobject shortcut tools > Align

Help > Modeling > Vertex section > Mesh Vertex > Align Vertex

You can use the "Align > Surface Alignment"

--------------------

For that example, you could also use "Streamline tools > Extend edge"

Thanks Steve

That is great there is plenty of options.

With Align command I get this result (see attachment) using the transform options. I tried all the radio buttons in this section and they all give the same result.

You can use the "Align > Surface Alignment"
I selected all the verts, ran the command and I get a little dialog box, but don't know what I am supposed to do from there. None of the verts on screen want to move ?

For that example, you could also use "Streamline tools > Extend edge"
Don't know how that one works even after reading the instructions in tool search. What does it mean selected edges must not connect to each other ?

Hi Kevjon,

For "Surface Align" there are some needed steps.
For you example:-
1. The sphere must be in the "Retopo reference list" and option "Retopo mode enabled" set as enabled.
2. When using "Surface Align" (in your example, for those end vertex), the surface alignment is made either from the vertex normal directions of the selection (in your example, by default, that would not work), or by using the camera direction. So you would need to set your camera in correct direct, which for that example is along the "X". Once camera is set, with the vertex selected, use "Align > Surface Alignment > Along camera direction" and click the bottom "Apply"

Each edge that is selected must be a single edge, each edge having its own 2 vertex. If (for example) you where to select 2 edges that share a vertex, then the tool will not function.

Thanks very much Steve, for these posts.

I can see now what I was doing wrong. Easy when you know how.

I will use these commands a lot in the course of my work, so really great to see in your animations how they work.

Hi Kevjon,

I made a vid some time ago showing use of the "Align" tool/function (creating an offset hole in a sphere). It was a bit clumsy, as I reverted to a default config so that the tools used could be seen from default).

It may be helpful

That video is very helpful, thanks.

You've given me some good ideas on how to add detail to areas of my models.

One other question.

The edge extend command is a streamline tool.

Any Idea how I add it to button ?

When I create a button and search for a command to assign to LMB event, it does not find any streamline tools.

The "Extend Edge" is a "basic" streamline tool, so it will need to be first added to a streamline engine tool before it can be added to a user button.

create streamline engine tool:-

Add "Extend Edge" to streamline engine tool (rename tool as required. I named it as "Edge extend" in my setup):-

When you open user button options to add tool/function, you can then search for the tool in the "Streamline tool" section:-

I would of made a quicker reply, but my internet PC decided to die part way through my post. Stupid computer LOL (looks like I may now have a bad memory stick)

You will eventually, it took me quite a while to get past the basics.
