It would be cool and in my opinion preferable to have the unlocked workplane center itself based on the active selection\active pivot\manipulator. On release/after a move is performed, the workplane would center around the updated position. This way when snapping to workplane is enabled one could tumble around the selection, using the unlocked workplane as an xy xz etc. plane constraint.

In the current behavior I find that the unlocked workplane is at a different depth than what I want to work with, centered at world origin rather than the selection, being tied to world origin is counter to my expectation of an unlocked workplane.

I think doing it automatically would be annoying, but a button to do so with one press would be nice.
