I'm having a frustrating time with Nvil and uvmapping and being able to get on with painting and texturing my models.

I have exported my 80hp engine model to obj from Nvil. (I turned off sub division to all parts that had it applied before I exported).

I bought the obj into 3d Coat and uvmapped it.
After uvmapping in 3DC I exported it out to obj.

Issue 1.
I then brought the model into Nvil and reapplied subdivision to the exhaust. The uv mapping for that item disappeared when sub'd is applied (it is ok without subd). When I try to export the model back out to 3DC for painting (with subd applied) I have no uv map at all.

Issue 2
Additionally if I instance array my engine cylinders 9 times and then export the model to obj (without any subd applied) and then bring it into 3DC or Modo I have no uv map at all.

Issue 3.
The other issue I have is that I cannot see all the uv mappings at once in Nvil. I can only see them for each individual part. I am assuming you would have to join all the meshes together to see the uvs in one map which isn't really suitable because some parts need sub'd and some dont, some will need to be radially instanced, etc.

As far as I know there is no way in 3DC to apply subd to individual parts. Its either the whole model or nothing so that is the reason I didn't do it there.

If you apply subd to other parts, do the uv disappear too?

Yes, any part that I apply sub'd causes that part to disappear from the "Texture uv mapping" dialog.

Also the name does not appear in the mesh drop down box within the Texture uv mapping dialog.

Currently, uv editing is not supported on subd mesh.

You may have your uv export disabled in obj exporting settings. Edit > Options > File Format Options > obj.

Ok, that is good to know. It would seem the best workflow is to model in Nvil only, then uvmap and render in other software.

I didn't even know about this dialog so never fiddled with it. Here are the settings. I can't see anything in it about disabling obj export settings.

Check the option of "Export textures and texcoords".
