I'd like to know, if you encounter any OutOfMemory messages when working with NVil.

I have a base mesh that is 3.5k vertices/6.7k faces, when subivided to level 3 it has 226k vertices/450k faces.  But seems not possible to work at this resolution in NVil. Undo or collapse subdivision lead to an OutOfMemory error message, and when trying a few other operations like loop cut or extrude, or subdividing the base mesh 3 times, the program is being shut down by the system (not responsive anymore or something like that).
At this point NVil uses approximately 800-900MB of the RAM, I have 8GB in total and 5 GB are still free to use. I know NVil ist still a 32Bit application, so I guess it can't use all that much memory. But where are the limits? If I take the mesh over to Maya 2014 64Bit (yeah, I'm lucky), at SubD level 3 the memory usage is similar and it's still pretty responsive.

I want to model a highpoly mesh and thought about making a tutorial video about it, because I used a lot of functions that Nvil offers, but the model isn't even half finished yet. And to have greater control over the end result, when it should be rendered later on, I'd like to work in a higher SubD level.
So, do you have similar problems? Nowadays, with meshes that come from sculpting software and retopo and all, performance and responsiveness should be a priority.

Enable LAA for NVIL.
You can use this application:- http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112556

That will increase the memory NVIL can use from approx 1.3 GB to approx 3.5 GB (if memory available on system)

Steve: So it's as easy as those first three steps?

No downsides to it, no instability?

ofcourse, with how often Kun updates it'd be useful if he'd do this when compiling, but perhaps there's a downside to that?

Thanks! That really helped, I just tried and no crashes. Still, it could be more responsive. Maybe NVil doesn't ship with that flag on by default, because it's not advised, if you have less than 3GB of RAM?

Yes.

I have not seen any instability directly related to using LAA for NVIL. I have been using NVIL with LAA for about 12 months. The only downside, is as mentioned by Vaquero, in that when you have a large polycount(large for NVIL) you do get slowdowns with various tools/functions.
Unfortunately, I have had to go back to other applications for some of the bigger models/scenes I have been working on.
