background image disappeared

The background image disappeared suddenly in the left viewport and no way to retrieve back. I delete all the image and then save, restart and open the scene again, no luck, it just won't show.

Also, I got this white 'delete' letter on lower left in the viewport.

elte: The file was not helpfull. Can you recreate the BG image disappearing.
The 'delete' letter means you have fired this command. Repeatable commands are dipsplayed once fired. They can be fired again through Misc Tools > Repeat Last Command.
