Are there going to be deformers added in the future? Most deformation apart from FFDs are spline based?

There are also other deform tools.

-- Geometry > Create > Deform > ...
-- Help > Contents > Modeling > Object Section > Create Primitive Objects > Lattice.
-- Help > Contents > Modeling > Mesh Section > UV Deform.
