Looks great, Samardac!  Nice UI colour scheme as well.  There are a few typos here and there, but IMO, this is exactly the sort of thing that should help newer users into Nvil.  May borrow a couple of your layout ideas for own setup ;).
Title: Re: Samardac Config 1.0
Post by: samardac on March 13, 2015, 03:35:06 pm
Yes, I made it for new users. Because when I started I had big troubles trying to understand how NVil works, also there was no such a simple tools like Select All, Clean Up etc... Also in user interface was not a lot of tools that you may use, but was a lot of tools you never use.
Here, everything is ready no need to learn how NVil works, no need to polish tools, no need to create Composite tools, no need to set up view port, no need to set up hotkeys, no need to dig into Stream line tools, everything is ready, just start modeling! And if you do not use some panels you can hide them in any time or even rebuild. :)

Thanks samardac, Very fun to play with. Is it possible to have the tool tips stay open longer when hovering over them (I'm a slow reader).
Title: Re: Samardac Config (The Best for New Users)
Post by: samardac on March 15, 2015, 04:45:44 am
I'm also slower reader :) I have already asked IStonia to make them stay visible till cursor is other button, or at least longer time than now.
Title: Re: Samardac Config (The Best for New Users)
Post by: IStonia on March 15, 2015, 05:47:42 am
The "Media" folder shouldn't be included in the download. It's not part the config and its contents may get changed in the future.

I notice that there are two "Rotation" buttons in the "Snap" group.

I will add a setting for the tooltip elapse time.

Why the "Grid" button is linked to a streamline tool instead of the command directly? I have to click it twice. The second click is to close the streamline tool.
Title: Re: Samardac Config (The Best for New Users)
Post by: samardac on March 15, 2015, 06:37:50 am
IStonia, fixed!
May I ask you for command that will hide top menu?
I want to make it hidden by default to not confuse new users with a lot of information from all that menus.
Everything for modelling is available in UI. But if user want he can turn it on by using secret shortcut like Ctrl+Alt+Shift+M.

Andrei

In 1.6 all the tool tips are removed which explains how to use the tool ?
Commands now only have basic command tool tip like LMB:Extude

I think for new users this is a step backward from earlier versions.

Title: Re: Samardac Config (The Best for New Users)
Post by: kevjon on March 18, 2015, 12:16:54 pm
Hi Andrei

Suggestion 1

I think you should add the manual options to orientation and position of Pivot.

I use this a lot to align the pivot to some weird angle and then I can scale (align) the vertices to that orientation. It comes in handy for any hard surface modelling. You can achieve a similar effect by modelling some temporary geometry and aligning the workplane to it and then setting the pivot to world in rotation and orientation but that is a lot more work to setup.

It is the sort of tool you could of used to align the verts on the top of the sugar bottle you modeled in your video where the falloff added a curve to them when viewed from the side.

Manual pivot options are not so important for organic modelling where you keep tweaking verts to get the shapes you want and there is not to much precision involved in the process.

Suggestion 2
Also and option to set the navigation space to workplane would be good. Maybe RMB to toggle it back to world.

BTW version 1.5 is working Ok but I had to restore my old Nvil folder in Appdata to get that to work again.

kevjon,
Added.
Samardac Config 1.6.1

Spline - Flip, Mirror, Filet, Extrude, Loft, Planar, Sweep was added.
Manual pivot mode was added.
Navigation button was added, to set navigation space from World to Workplane.

But this version is without Tool Tips, I have a lot of time to restore all of them. Do not know why they diapered. If somebody want help me with this let me know, i'll tell you how to make it.

Hi Andrei

A couple of New User Questions

1

I can't find mesh mirror command in your interface. (I have found combine meshes).

I assume this is the tool you would use to mirror a mesh and apply symmetry to it or do you have another way of doing it ?

2

I want to align all the vertices of a mesh to X=0 so I can mirror the mesh and apply symmetry, how do I do that with your interface ? I assume I would select all the vertices and enter 0 in the coordinate display. Where is the coordinate display ?
Title: Re: Samardac Config (The Best for New Users)
Post by: samardac on March 21, 2015, 06:15:28 am
kevjon,
1. Click on button Symmetry- Create, with LMB or RMB. It will create symmetry In positive or negative side. MMB Enable/Disable symmetry.

2. You do no need to align any points to create symmetry. But if you need to align use scale and the appropriate pivot position and orientation.

I do not put here coordinate display becoouse never used it.
Title: Re: Samardac Config (The Best for New Users)
Post by: samardac on March 21, 2015, 06:55:59 am
Also kevjon, my suggestion is to use NVil for "organic" shapes, if you want to make Cad like geometry use MoI instead.

Hi Andrei

The RMB does not work with the chamfer tool in your interface. Is that because RMB is assigned to zoom selected ?

When I hit the 'F' key to chamfer I can use the RMB to add a nice fillet edge.

New version 2.2 is Here!
Updates:
The greatest hard edge shading was added by IStonia! Now it tuned and ready to use!
So you have two mods First when you work (Work Mode) and second Preview Mode when you Navigating viewport. In this Preview mode this new feature works! You will see all unsubdevided objects like if you work in CAD Program and even better, only hard edges will have black color!
This is how it works:

Preview mode(Really greate!):

How it was before(I do not like it at all!!! You can not see any edges):

Kevjon, just duplicate this message from MoI forum  :)
kevjon, it was not a bug(I mean when I could not move up edges when I select full loop at 4.16). I just found solution. I'll fix it in new releas.
For now you can go Edit-Options-Using Vertex Normals on Transform (check it).
And it will work like a charm!

New version 2.3 is here.

Updates:
1. Creased edges was back to red Color. I accidentally make them black in previous version.
2. Now in Retopo mode you can transform and it will snap to reference object.

Experimental features:

1. New feature that keep Harden edges Hard after Autosmooth, allow me to make Autosmooth practically automated. Now it set to Alt. And It will run everytime when you navigating viewport.

2. Quick Pivot setting was added. I analyze what combination of pivot position/orientstion I use most of all and made buttons for this. Also I set Shortcuts for this, check it in toll tips.

Use no less than this version: http://www.digitalfossils.com/Download/NVil-Apr-23-15.rar

Hi Andrei

When I zoom into my model in any ortho view to tweak verts or do some detail stuff, clipping kicks in and I can't see the verts to tweak. It is worse in the back view than the front or side ortho view.

I found clip plane tab in preferences but don't know what to set to fix the problem.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks Andrei, that solves the problem for clipping.

Another question. In the back ortho view the model/polygons are black or very dark and doesn't show the color of the default material. Is there a solution to this ?

When I say they are black or very dark, I'm not talking about backface of polygons

Ha, ha, never notice it, check this one, I fix it, now back face a dark grey, thanks for reporting it.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/al1j8dli6qqp6k2/Samardac_Config_2.4.exe?dl=0

I now get backface in gray but front face still black (or near black) with headlight on.

I sent the scene to you in the email to your gmail account, if you want to play with it as I am unsure why it works ok for you and not for me.

Hay Kevin,
This is how it looks now:

I just play a bit with lights and it is the best result I could make.
Back face in Gray now turned off, your fuselage now looks not bed. Back face is dark in that engine detail becouse  light do not penetrate here.

Version 2.4 is here.

Updates:

I continue to experiment with Pivot window and looks like I found nice solution, this is how it looks now:

I made the settings that you will use most of all the bigger button and small that you will use very rare.
Also I tried to make Orientation and Position to look visually different, to help you distinguish them.

Behavior:
When you go to the object mode(F1) Position and Orientation will set to Object.
When you go to subobject mode from object mode or spline (1,2,3) Position will set to selection and Orientation will set to World.
When you go to manual mode(F2) Position and Orientation will set to Manual.

Shortcuts:
(F1) Set Position and Selection to World. Also Set Object Pivot.
(F2) Set Position and Selection to Manual. Also Set Manual Pivot.
(F3)* (New Shortcut) Drop Pivot, i.e. set Position to Selection and Orientation to World.

Also you can click RMB to set both Position and Orientation at the same time.

I tested this scheme looks nice, I hope it will make you work with Pivot in the Most comfortable way ever!
Also I hope you will use this window very rare because a lot of things now automated for the best use.

Some modification was made with lightning.

Hi Andrei

That looks good.

When you say play with lights what do you mean ? Do you mean move them around in the scene ? Pull them away from the model ?

Is headlight still turned on or did you turn it off ?

I'm not worried about polygon backface being black or dark grey, its more about being able to see front facing polygons clearly in the ortho views.

kevjon,
Redownload this config I just modify it a bit, seconds ago.

You can turn Head Light on or off as you wish by default it is On.
I played with all settings of lights, by moving them and change their intensity e.t.c.
So looks like I found best balance.

Thanks, I've downloaded it and all sorted now. Thanks.

The materials that are white, now look white in the scene.

Incidently I solved by viewport clipping problem by going to the view menu and checking "Advance Focus Point on Orthographic view zooming". Now I can use the mouse wheel to zoom in as close as I want in Ortho views.

Thanks, I did not know about that option, just read about it here:

Looks like it have some side effect, I'll think about using it. Now I use - best fit and it solves all problems with clipping.

Andrei,
I'm getting on well with your rapidly evolving Config.
But, I do find it a bit difficult to read as my eyesight is not so good.
Any chance of making the letters black instead of grey to improve the contrast?
In Preferences/Colors I'm using the Standard option for the Dock Caption Scheme.
In Preferences/Colors I can change the HUD to black but can't see a way of making the characters in the Docks black.

Hi Andrei

One thing I couldn't find in your interface is the ability to rotate the workplane. It allows you to orientate your top, right views to the polygons your working on when they are at weird angles in 3d space.

I also find I have to go to the menus all the time to bring up the universal manipulator. Do you not use it ?
Title: Re: Samardac Config (The Best for New Users, www.nvil.info)
Post by: samardac on April 26, 2015, 11:40:41 am
kevjon, about workplane, you will need SET polygon option, to set WP to selected polygon:
(I just putted arrow to the LOCK by mistake, it have to point to SET)

About universal manipulator, I never use it because it is too big and massy.
I use only shortcuts for Transforming and Manipulator I use only to see its position and orientation.

Hi Andrei

I watched you video on the workplane so am familiar with all those options.

The option that is missing is to rotate the workplane. In this way you can align your views better with the polygons when they are on a weird orientation.

Hay, I'm very glad to present you 2.5 version!
There are some big updates here. And looks like NVil now is the best for the Hard edge work. Also now going from Hard edge to SubD is few clicks deal, it is simple like never before! Check tutorials.

HARD EDGES.

--- Now thanks to IStonia, Crease commands and Harden/Soften edge commands was combined and Now it called - Sharpen.

In SubD mode it will Crease edges in Hard Edge mode it will Soften/Harden edges.

(B)

LMB - Modify Sharpness.  (Drag to the left/right to modify)
RMB - Clear Sharpness.
MMB - Select Sharpened Edges.

These commands was optimized, for example now Select Sharpened Edges command can be run in any mods(Object, edges, etc..)

After you Clear Sharpness in Hard edge mode, Autosmooth will perform automatically so you will see result automatically.

--- There is new command - Polish and it includs AutoSmooth and Optimize, shortcut is RMB (Finally I found good command for RMB  :)).
Notice! Do not use it on object with a lot of polygons, it can go too long.
Also now it works only in  Subobject mode.
Check tool tip for more information(Tools Section)

I decided to remove shortcut - Alt, because it can slow down Navigating with big objects.

- Threshold of weld option of Optimize tool was increased so now if you run it, it will weld not only veretecies that lay in the same place but also that ones that lay close to each-other. It have to simplify work.

--- Hard Edge window was removed, because no need in it any more.

MANIPULATOR.

---- After a long Experimenting and work process I decided to make Manipulator small and use it only for Monitoring Pivot Position/Orientation.
So there is no need any more to show/hide it. It always ON. It is too small, and tolerance was set to the smallest so it will not interfere you to select something under it.
Now there is new button - TRANS. that will show/hide Manipulator. Also it contain big Tool Tip with Help about transforming.

OTHER.

--- Duplicate(LMB), Split(MMB) and Combine(RMB) now set to shortcut F. Now we have this shortcut free and it will allow us to avoid Bug with shortcut of previous Combine Command (Shift+D)

--- Boolean now have Shortcut - (Ctrl+1)

--- Shaded, Sharp options was removed from Shading option. There is no need in them any more.

Thanks Andrei (and Istonia) for your work on hard edges.
It'll be really good to have this work consistently in Nvil.

The videos & config are great for explaining how it works.

The manipulator implementation is going to take some getting used to but once you do looks like it will really speed up the workflow. I did find it a pain before trying to select verts that were under the manipulator, it just wouldn't do it.

The things is that working with shortcuts instead of manipulator have absolutely the same functionality.
I is absolutely like dragging Manipulator but without manipulator :)
Now I can not analyse how advanced it is, because work this way for a long time. But I think as you say you have to get use to it. So that is why I keep buttons for manipulator but made them smaller and I made Manipulator twice smaller than original, so you still can use it. It is for better transition from manipulator to shortcuts.

Hi Andrei

I've playing with Move, scale, rotate commands for the past half hour without manipulator and starting to get used to it. Its a very intuitive way to work, I can see the benefits. I just need to commit to memory which button to use to perform certain actions within each of those tools. It will take more practice and time but I'm sure I won't be going back to manipulators once it becomes instinctive.

kevjon,
I'll give you some help in this process.

Moving (W)
The most we use move manipulator to move by plane I call it 2D Moving. So it has shortcut - LMB (button that use must of all).

On second place is move Move on Axis like X, Y or Z. I call it 1D Moving. So it has shortcut - RMB (button that use not so often like LMB).

On the third place is free moving, I call it 3D moving. We use it very rare. So it has shortcut - MMB (button that use rare).

2D Moving:

1D Moving:

3D Moving:

Scale:
(R)
The same thing, it has 1D,2D and 3D scale.
LMB - 2D scale
RMB - 1D scale
MMB - 3D scale.
But during this post I thought that I use 1D scale more often then 2D, so looks like i'll change it in the future.

Rotate:
(R)
Very simple only LMB!

Send me model pleas, can not say something from image.
Some notice why you have so many edges? I mean selected, you can reduce its amount twice, and have the same result. You can have them as much as fuselage have and have good result. Also you can go directly from fuselage instead of creating new object.

For commands that are not in your interface (2.5) that I think I will frequently use, I add a new button and assign the Nvil Command to it.

I have done that for

At some point Istonia probably needs to sit down and try and rationalise the menus to make it easier for users to find commands. Its pretty hard at the moment with lots of menus and sub menus and no real explanation of what those commands in the menus do or control.

Scale locally already here. Shortcut V+MMB.
In config there are all local transformations, shortcut (V), Move(LMB), Scale(MMB) and Rotate(RMB).
You can read about them in Tool tip of big button TRANS.
Looks like I'll make button for this.

In witch situation you use Workplane rotation?

Looks like it is impossible. IStonia spend a lot of time creating tools, so all other suff we have to make by our self. So that is why I made my Config and a lot of tutorials.

Ok, cool thanks, I couldn't find it when looking to scale sub object locally. No need to add a button for it. I think you should keep your interface as streamlined as you can an not add buttons unless you need it for your own work.

If there is something specifically that I need related to my own work, it is easy for me to add extra buttons with the customize command.

I did not know about F8, thanks a lot !  :)
That will make it easy for me to search for tools and understand what they do.

Your doing a great job turning Nvil into a very productive tool. I'm still trying to memorise all the keyboard shortcuts and which button does what, but once I do I should be able to work without hesitation.

Just a question about Bridge & edge mode.

When I select the top edge of this shape to cap it and then hold down Y key, it immediately closes the shape. It does not give me options to use RMB or MMB or double click MMB. How does it work ?

You just created a lot of bridges, Becouse Y in edge mode when you select multiple edges will bridge them.
To cap this you have to select one edge and then Y+double MMB.

Ok I just tried.

I selected 1 of the 8 edges and then press Y+double MMB. Nothing happens. Should it create a single polygon (ngon) on top ?

I also tried selecting one edge and then holding Y with MMB & RMB but still got nothing.

I've also been playing with the colors of your interface, trying to make it a little more interesting to look at (for myself). I came up with this based on the dark scheme.

Unfortunately, I can't make it exactly as I would like as I am limited what I can do by the hard coded colours of Light and Dark scheme.

Great work on the creasing, that looks very nice.

Yep, when you update your config I would have to change the colour scheme again, which is annoying.

I do have a question about Hide (J). I select an object and press hide button. When I press button again it unhides everything in the scene rather than just the object I last hide. Is there any tool to unhide just the last hide ?

It will unhide everything if nothing is selected.
To unhide only one specific object use object list (Explorer button). Just RMB object you need will hide/Unhide it.

PreferenceSettings_Colors.xml is added to config files. It is useful if some one want to use other people's config file but want to keep his own color scheme.

Cool, Thanks Istonia.

It would be great if we could also change colors that are hard coded in the light and dark schemes in preferences. Such as group box border colors, viewport border color, window header colors, window font colors etc. I would be able to get a nicer interface.

Great work on the Ak-15 Andrei, looks really sinister.

Hay everybody, for a long period I present to you new version of config 3.5.
So many stuff was fixed and improved so I even have no track of them  :)
Rewroted a lot of tool tips, rebuilded a lot of commands, Colors of UI and Edges was modified/fixed, all new features form IStonia was implemented and tuned, a lot of bugs was fixed, Object List and scene explorer was deleted and now config use only Scene Herarchy window, etc... Also some commands from interface was deleted to simplify things, because we do not need them any more with new Object Highlight/Preview system.

Major additions:
Object Highlight/Preview system.
This is how it works, if you select object all other objects become semitransparent, to preview model in best  tuned way you have to press Space during viewport navigation.
So now we solve problem with object Highlight, and improved workflow because we can select through semitransparent unselected objects.
I think it is very Major Updated I dream about it for a long time!

You need no less than this version:

Download config:
http://bit.ly/1Pg2KTO

Jut run Samardac_Config_3.5.exe !

Forget to say also was added new Boolean window and Streamline Shortcuts for these.
It is very simple and intuitive. Also it works directly with objects instead of old window that worked with meshes and was too complicated. See toolTips to know how it works!

I'm starting to think Nvil isn't for met. Too much frigging around with. What did I do wrong? I downloaded your file and ran the .exe...http://samardac.com/nvil-forum/Smileys/default/embarrassed.gif

After running your config I can no longer get the object properties to display. I was able to resolve the issue prior to installing your config

See post here

http://samardac.com/nvil-forum/index.php/topic,3668.0.html

But the solution no longer works even with the file options selected as mentioned in the reply by Istonia.

How do I turn on this feature after installing your config file?

Have a look at these related tips.

To toggle top menu visible, Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Home.

View > Windows > Object List Window / Scene Hierarchy Window / Scene Explorer Window.

Edit > Preference > Option1 > Keep object list in scene explorer > Keep scene hierarchy in scene explorer.
