I there a way to find stray verts?

In vert_selection mode, there is "Selection -> All 2-Edge Vertices" or "Selection -> Closed 2-Edge Vertices" (The difference between those 2 are the first will select vertex with 2 edges on open edges, the 2nd, those 2 edge vertex within the mesh)

You can also use View-> Windows-> "Math Selection -> Vertices with edges=" to select vertex with a certain number of edges.
