Title: Branding and Names
Post by: Passerby on December 14, 2011, 10:30:10 pm
http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74005&page=66

just wondering when were going to get back to that and decided on the Final name for the APP and the direction that it will be going in.

seems Anvil to be the name most agreed on, just kinda curious if and when this will be decided on and done since i would like to work on starting a site for VW, and making some changes to these forums to match.

I have decided to use N-Vil as the new app name. I will contact Memag and see if he can make the logos for us.

that looks really nice.
nice idea on the logo have it kinda shaping it's self.
once istonia sees it i could start on the forum  style again, and start on a site.

if you got a good idea for that too i could give you FTP access to the server to work on it, or you could send me a mockup of the desgin and i could work on the markup and stylesheet for it.

Thanks!

I am afraid I don't have too much time to work on website design, at the moment.
I can send you "blue modeling blob" image as a separate file if you want to put in in website header or
in some flash banner animation (I could do that as well), but let's wait for Istonia to confirm on design and splash.I have sent him logo and splash files.

Cheers!

ya sure i could play with the logo's and see what kinda site i could build around them, even if he confirms those right away it will prolly be a while till the actually name change happens so that should leave me with some time to work on a site.

i prefer the cleaner material on the anvil, find the roughed up one clashes with the rest of it.
overall very nice concepts, and the icon is very quickly recognizable.

Hey Memag,
Very nice work on the logo!! It's very clean, with a great choice of colors. I can easily visualize those colors being used within the UI. Thanks for taking the time!
My only comment is I actually prefer the Anvil without the blob and hands on the top. Not that I don't like the blob, it's just I think the Anvil by itself with the logo on the front is very striking and professional. You can always judge a good logo by how it looks when it's small, like an icon. That being said, I really like the icons you've made with just the anvil. The blob seems to make the whole thing way too busy.
Once again, very nice work!

Hay thanks!

Well I can make adjustments, Istonia has the icon files so I think he'll pick one for program.
I like the anvil and logo on top for icon as well.
Blob and anvil were made for splash screen, I'm not sure if Istonia wants just the anvil.
I'll make a new spash screen.
Thanks again!

@Memag think you could toss me un cropped versions of the ones you made for the splash screen.

thinking of working on a redoing the forums in that style sometime in the next few weeks.

so some uncropped versions of PSD's would be great.

Than you very much.
I think we can make adjustments later, when Istonia gives green light.

Aren't we all Silo refugees?
There there, it'll be alright.

What do you need Istonia ,what adjustments?
I sent all the files to passerby, for the forum/website.

I am happy with the icon and splash that the new update is using. If you still have better idea, give it a try.

Btw, what kind of TRUCK are you driving? lol

I have no new ideas Istonia. We could adjust and reinvent the logo and icons endlessly.
Seems like everybody has something different in mind, I don't think we can please all.
So it's better to stop at some point. People got used to uglier stuff and memorized them.
There is no reason why Nvil would be different.

Let me know if you want to change something.
Cheers!
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: IStonia on February 09, 2012, 09:18:39 pm
Memag, I think the icon may be a little bit too dull and flat that makes it hard to spot from some background colors.
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Memag on February 09, 2012, 09:21:17 pm
I can make it black and white, like autodesk icons?
Two colors, one for anvil the other for logo?
Any suggestions.

Can't wait. But just take your time.
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Memag on February 09, 2012, 11:06:47 pm
I think it's "dull" because it uses transparency, most icons are placed in rectangles/circles and don't utilise transparency as much.
Maybe I should make one with rectangle and one with transparency but with B/W for more contrast?
Any suggestions are welcome.

Or "one Nvil to rule them all"?
This one has transparency but it's well cut off the background by orange circle.

Splash #4,

Really like #4 here. The pleasing colors really tie the anvil and blob together nicely!

 Nice designs!

Thanks.
Suggestions and fresh ideas are always welcome.
I am not sure if icon could be improved, in fact I know it can,
but I would need some feedback and input.

Cheers!

Hey Memag.  I like your designs I was just thinking that most icons are extremely simplistic and bold so I tried taking your font design and circular idea but changed the colours slightly.

I think that the orange/yellow circle is too similar to The Foundry's designs (http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke/) unfortunately.

Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Memag on February 28, 2012, 11:57:40 am
Nice!

Yeah well, most of everything has been done already.
Icons with transparency didn't work out well as they couldn't be read easily.
It is tough to include the logo, anvil and blob (or any combination) in one tiny icon,
so it makes sense to simplify. I guess ,in the end at least one of the elements must go from the icon.

Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: ghib on February 28, 2012, 12:17:30 pm
I totally agree, trying to squeeze too much info into that small space leads to a muddled design.  Simplify all the way.  Just taking a look at the icons on my taskbar and desktop shows that the clear & successful ones are solid in the centre even if they have transparency and bright bold shapes and colours.

I really like the two tone scheme you have going but we all know that it's an appealing combination don't we?  (https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=teal+%26+orange)

I say run with it.
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Memag on February 28, 2012, 12:36:24 pm
It could have been any other (complementary or not) color pair ( in style of Adobe packages, Zbrush, Silo, Modo..).I like warm/cold contrasts and contrasts in general, there was no particular reason why I put those hues, but I liked it. All icon are just variations of the basic few ideas and shapes.

Feel free to experiment.

Istonia,

can splash screens contain/display transparency?
Maybe I'd do few more if it's possible.

Hi.

As I really didn't like the zoom cursor I took liberty to redo some of the current cursor designs (navigation and some modeling tools), so I'd thought to share them. Extract archive to VW folder.

cursor set (http://www.mediafire.com/?x4oler90g569uwq)

Istonia , is there a way to work on UI design. how would one approach making custom skins, icons, tabs?
Did you work with Qt before?

Also, if you like the custom cursors, fell free to use them as default.
Thanks!
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Passerby on March 14, 2012, 04:00:52 pm
think the icons should be more simplistic.

Though i do agree with you that using QT would be great for the UI, since with the current system, the UI isnt exactly consistent with it's self. Some things are styled with the OS 's style others aren,t so think it would look better to just give it all it's own style with QT like maya does.

this also allows for some cool features too since qt or even gtk allow you to do things such as ripping off menus into floating dialogs, and a more functional radial menu.
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Memag on March 14, 2012, 04:20:24 pm
Yes, well I did add quite a bit on some of them (extrude, orient and chamfer).
I wanted to do simple color icons but Nvil doesn't allow them.Only monochromatic ones so I went on cursor rage. The default ones are pretty simplistic, these complex suit me fine for the time being.

But the vertex and vertex weld are pretty cool , right?

I agree about UI, the reason is exactly the inconsistency of toolbars, menus etc.
It should all be a part of one UI, smooth and nice.
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Passerby on March 14, 2012, 04:23:57 pm
looked kinda cool but i think the vertex weld one takes a lot of space and can sometimes cover up what your welding.

ya would be nice if it supports color cursors, with a alpha.
Title: Re: Branding and Names
Post by: Memag on March 14, 2012, 04:27:10 pm
Well, you have welding visor to see what you're welding. :)

also rather cool, that they are separate files and dont require a resources hack on the exe or the dll's to edit the cursors.

never really looked at nvils files too much and didnt know all the icons and cursors are there.

Memag, there is a problem with the flash screen. Windows doesn't handle individual semi transparent pixels.

Is there something I could do to fix it, I did add "shadow" which is semi transparent.
Let me know how to proceed, if possible.

can you make something for a favicon for a site, so something with this branding that still looks good at sizes as small as 32x32 pixels?

See with Istonia, I sent him all the icon and graphic files.
There were 32x32 icons in the package as well.

well now that, the site is up, and being worked on http://digitalfossils.com/

does anyone want to work on some better screensshots for the site, and maybe some videos i can link in to show off features.

don't think my crappy saber made in 15min really cuts it, and im mostly working on environments atm so not the best stuff to show off in a subd modeler.
