Title: Icons for Smardac Config.
Post by: samardac on October 05, 2015, 12:32:41 pm
Kevjon, you made nice icons for tree, may be you will make some icons for config? If you have time I'll let you know my idea.

Hi Andrei

I've been away for a few days so thanks for pointing me here from the scene explorer thread or I might of missed it.

I am planning to make new icons for my config but its a really big job that would take a lot of time so I will be working on them bit by bit when I have time between full time work and hobby 3d projects. It would be no problem to share those icons with you for the Samardac config.

I would be happy to hear your ideas and thoughts on it which you can post here or if you prefer we can correspond via email.

I thought to try to add icons for this panel:

My be first create 4-5 icons to see if it will look good.

Hi Andrei

No problems, I'll send them to you when done so you can see if they would work with your interface design.

Give me a couple of days.

Andrei

Here is a preliminary design so you can see how icons might look with your config. The icons themselves need to be refined (to look better) but its a start.

Hi, it looks great! I thought that they will be colored but in grey it looks nice too.
Check this:

Also I changed a bit color of text and made it a bit darkere check this version, I going to release it soon.

Can you place this iccons in to this version to see how it will looks.

I agree some icons look too large. It is what I meant by some needed to be refined.

I'll tweak them a bit and add them to your 3.3 config. I like the darker fonts so I'll make my icons darker to match.

I think the grey icons suit your interface design better than coloured.
I probably should also produce a black icon version (for the checked button state) to match your black button highlight.

Still working on it but will insert them into the new 3.5 interface.

A discussion here http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?384881-icons-is-the-next-big-thing-for-blender (http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?384881-icons-is-the-next-big-thing-for-blender) from blender users about doing something similar to blender. Interesting the different responses to icons.

Little bit of an update

Still very much WIP so some icons need to be refined. I am finding it hard to keep all icons grey, so probably will end up doing colored versions of them.

Some buttons like 'sharp' and 'unfreeze all' I haven't had a good idea as yet for an icon, keep thinking about it......

Wow really greate, I think that icons with color like fresh air, and make UI more interesting. So I support you to make them colored.

Andrei, will do.
I'll still try and keep a color theme as much as possible so the interface looks consistent rather than too multicolored.

I'll work further on the colors after I've designed all the icons.

Hi Andrei

I don't have keyshot but do have Serif DrawPlus which has all the pantone colour libraries.

Can you elaborate a little more about what you are thinking with regard to colour icons & pantones and I'll see what I can do ?

I mean use for example orange, yellow and red colors from this pallete.

I mean I like a lot this pastel tones. I thin they will suit color scheme of config.
You can try to make some icons using these tones and we will see how it looks.

Here is first take on a coloured version.

If there are particular colours you would like to see me try for these icons let me know the RGB values and I can try them out.

I like how orange and yellow looks on first buttons, I think it is way to go!
Also check this buttons of Cinema 4D they have this colors orange and yellow and it looks really nice!

Also as you can see some times it uses blue and green I think we can do the same for example on instances and other stuff like it. You already made instances green :) A little White color on some details also looks not bed. As I can Save buttons have a bit white, it looks good.
I think we have to use the same colors like in C4D.

Thanks, your C4D post helps.

Couple of questions.

The C4D icons look to be 24 or 32px. I am working with much smaller size of 16px so cannot get fine detail into the icon at this size
I do not know exactly how big they are but they are defenetly bigger than our buttons in Config. So it is not a problem if you loose details, I know it is impossible withthis small icon size.

Your interface is light grey. Are you thinking I make the background of the icon a mid to dark grey like C4D and leave the button light grey ?
Can y8u make one button to see how it willlooks?

Here is a sample of a C4D type colour on the button.

I have had to composite this image together in a image editor.

I could not get the image to display correctly on the button in Nvil, it kept giving display errors. The buttons work well with alpha channels but don't work well with solid coloured backgrounds for some strange reason.

I think button looks good but that dark background looks like do not fit well with this light scheme of UI.
I think we have to go with transparent background, you made it nice here, but keep that yellow/orange/dark red colors:

Or we can try to make dark scheme like C4D have and try its buttons with gray background. What do you think?
Title: Re: Icons for Smardac Config.
Post by: kevjon on November 12, 2015, 12:10:48 pm
I think if you like orange and yellow colors they will stand out better on dark grey theme. With the 16px icons I am creating, I am unable to add the black borders around the yellow and orange to make them pop on light theme. I just don't have enough pixels to work with.

The red works well with the light theme but would not work well in a dark theme.

So I think we need light colored icons for dark theme.
Dark colored icons for light theme.

Here is an example in red.

I just elaborate pallet for icons, you can take colors from preference icon.
First colors are Yellow and Orange, secondary is Brown.
These icons are not use any type of strokes.

I really like the style you've come up with.

However I don't think the bright colors read so well against the light grey scheme. They would probably be better suited to a dark theme.

Any interest in a blue theme, I prefer that one ?
Or a blue-gray theme could look quite good also.

No matter what theme is chosen I think other colors would need to be introduced as there are many buttons in your interface.

Hay I think we have to use all the schemes you shown. Different colors for different buttons groups.
For example check this:

I just randomly put colors to show you idea.
May be it will help to distinguish things different buttons different colors.
What do you think?

Sounds like a good idea assigning different colors to different groups of the interface.

I'll probably keep most colors muted so as not to end up like all the multi colored icons of the Nvil default interface.

Yes keep them muted.
Show it when you will make some groups.

Hay Kevjon,
I just thinking of it for one day to understand what I feel and I feel like I'll injure you if I'll say that something I like something not because you remade it once and work for a long time.
So I have no idea how to be, what do you think of current UI?
Title: Re: Icons for Smardac Config.
Post by: kevjon on December 16, 2015, 11:51:10 am
Andrei

I am happy with the icons I have come up with so far. I think they do make the interface more user friendly than just plain text buttons.

I will need to refine the colors of them later on. It is too colorful for my personal taste at the moment. I tend to like consistant colored interfaces than multi colored ones.

Do you have software DrawPlus ? If so once I have finished the icons I can give you the file and you play with different colors and design of them until you have something you like for your config.

I will be offline for the next month so we can discuss further in late January.

While I am away, by all means post any ideas you have.

Even if you decide you don't want icons in Samardac config or prefer to design your own, I will not be injured because I will use the icons in my own version of Nvil (which is a slight modification of yours).

I think the same about current UI.

Yep, when you finish them send them to me if need it I'll install DrawPlus.

So for now I think it will be better if you will finish them like you want because I only confuse you with my ideas.

PS
I like this colors:

Looks good, but they are so sad. In apposite MoI UI is so positive. So I really confused and loose the path to follow.
